While I'm a relatively new hypnotist and have just scratched the surface in my reading and exposure to others' techniques, I'm wondering what stories you can share about what has worked successfully for people wishing to lose 100+ lbs and maintaining their new weight?

I was also very disappointed to see that not a single person reported using hypnosis for significant weight loss (30+ lbs) on the National Weight Control Registry. Do any hypnotists track and monitor their clients' results and/or encourage them to self-report to other Associations?

My underlying motivation is that a close friend of mine is morbidly obese and has struggled for years with her weight. She has exhausted just about every therapy and modality imaginable and is now scheduled to work with my BCH Teacher. We're both very excited about this new method for her! (I gave her an intro session and she's pleased with her week+'s result of losing interest in soft drinks...a good start)

While my friend begins her hypnosis, I'm looking for any similar (massive weight loss) success stories and support that I can offer her for positive reinforcement! Right now, she's doing this more or less on faith in what I'm telling her and I feel like I'm just a step or two ahead of her.

With sincere appreciation,

I have been working with weight management clients for about 3 years now. I have a 3 session program that not only focuses on the weight but why they eat they way they do (ie. emotions, trigger events, foods, etc.). I also encourage exercise (in small, achievable steps). No depravation and no guilt allowed! I also use a reinforcement cd. I have a married couple that have easily lost over 100 lbs. between the two (she is now petite and at her goal loss of about 30 lbs.). They have make the program a part of their lives and he continues to release the weight. I saw him at Christmas, about 9 months after they took my program, and I did not recognize him! IT CAN BE DONE! Your client must be motivated, encouraged, held responsible for her own actions and willing to change. Good luck. This is a wonderfully fullfilling part of hypnosis and I hope you receive as much pleasure at watching others achieve their goals as I do!

Chris... as Tammey wrote, keeping the client motivated is more important than guiding them as to how to eat correctly. If they stay motivated and focused on their goal and you help them with patience, more success is inevitable.

Considering I did over 5,000 weight loss sessions in the last few years alone, I feel comfortable sharing this info as a suggested approach with your client. You may not find anything I write to be new, but may reinforce what you may already believe and do. And yes, I have had clients that have lost a substantial amount of weight without feeling deprived, guilty or in any way jeopardize their health with pills or extreme behavior changes.

My D.E.P.T.H. model is Denial, Emotional Pain, Truth & Honesty. Notice there is nothing in there about food and eating. Quite frankly, I don't care "what" someone is doing that comes to me because it's all about "why" they are doing it. If we focus on the what, I believe the what (substance or behavior) gets replaced with another what.

Denial begins after behaviors associated to emotional pain (or emotional voids that cause emotional pain) begin and can't be changed. We all know we shouldn't eat the way we do when we get fatter and need to be physically active. But because will power doesn't create the necessary changes, rationalizing and justifying the behaviors begins... Denial. I believe that all personal success and freedom from the D.E.P part of D.E.P.T.H. come from Truth and Honesty... with self. This is when we start taking responsibility and in this frame of mind, when assisted by a professional hypnotist for direction and subconscious change, success can be achieved.

Some of what I do with a client in the D.E.P.T.H. model is:
use the affect bridge technique for a clean start. This works tremendously to realize the ISE

increase confidence, self esteem and self worth.

Get the client to realize that change is constant and their situation is temporary

Use time as a reference for increased awareness and acceptance. It took time to get to this point and it will take time to get healthy... but... that time is going to pass regardless of what you do.

PMF.. present moment focus. We spend too much time focusing on what was or what will be which in turn causes problems. PMF removes a lot of unnecessary anxiety, impatience, doubt, etc.

One metaphor I like to use with clients who require a slow steady path of progress is;
"The tortoise won the race. Slow, steady, consistent progress."

I realize this is just a brief bit but you can learn all about my program at the NGH August Convention: How to Create Super Success with Weight Loss Clients -- Post convention course #213 - Monday, August 14 - begins at 9AM

My best,
Tom Nicoli

Hi Tom,

Unfortunately I didn't get to the convention - I don't think I'm familiar with the "ISE". I hope you will tell me what that is.

Thanks,

Aline,
I have lost 70 pounds since January. I did this using self hypnosis. I have worked on finding the difference between eating until I am full and eating until I was no longer hungry. I have found foods I like which are healthier. AS usual, Tom is right, slow and steady wins the race. Indeed losing too fast is not necessarily good for the body. By the by, an ISE is an initial sensitizing event. What caused the need to protect herself by gaining weight is the ISE. You know what an affect bridge is, so follow the emotion to the ISE and see if it reveals anything.
Aline, from there I am sure you will have a great success. Follow up with her and have her weigh herself only every week or so. Tom suggests this and I have been doing the same thing with my clients. By the way, I will lose an additional 40 to 45 lbs by the next convention in MA.
I hope that helped.
Take care,
Tim
